It’s been two summers since Suicide Squad made its debut in theaters and now we’re finally getting some information about a Joker scene that was shown in the trailers, but not in the final cut of the movie. Promotional material for the DCEU movie made it seem that Jared Leto’s Joker was going to be all over the screen, leading the gang. When audiences finally got to see Leto’s controversial take on the Clown Prince of Crime, he was barely in any of the movie and one of the scenes that was teased in trailer wasn’t even included.
Many fans complained about Jared Leto’s portrayal of the Joker and at the same time, they were also the same fans who complained that he wasn’t in the movie enough. Like it or not, Suicide Squad is a divisive movie. Critics bashed it and so did moviegoers, yet it earned nearly $800 million at the box office in its theatrical run. Hardcore DC fans still stand behind the movie but are still wondering what director David Ayer did with all of the Joker scenes.
In a new social media post, David Ayer explained one of the scenes that was cut from Suicide Squad, but was shown in the trailers for the movie. The scene in question features Jared Leto’s Joker bruised and bloodied in a tuxedo, which was only a tiny glimpse when shown in the trailer. However, the imagery was striking enough that fans immediately noticed that it wasn’t in the final cut. Ayer had this to say about the backstory of the deleted scene.
“After Joker dropped HQ from the help and crashed, Enchantress made a deal with him. He was going to take Harley home and be King of Gotham Harley stood up to him and refused to betray her new friends. The Squad turned on him and he escaped.”
The reasoning behind cutting the scene out of Suicide Squad isn’t clear, but there’s not a lot about the movie that would be considered to be clear in the first place. David Ayer reportedly wrote the screenplay in six weeks and the theme and tone of the movie dramatically shift from one scene to the other, which is more than likely because of the numerous reshoots that the project went through. Suicide Squad 2 is reportedly in pre-production as of this writing, but David Ayer will not be returning to direct.
Suicide Squad had plenty of plot holes, but at least one of them is tied together now thanks to David Ayers explanation. As far as Suicide Squad 2 is concerned, it’s been reported that Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, and Will Smith will be back to reprise their roles, but just how much of the Joker will we get to see this time around? That’s the real question, especially since DC Films and Warner Bros. are working on a standalone Joker origin movie at the moment that definitely will not star Leto.
