Benedict Cumberbatch Teases Doctor Strange's Fate in Infinity War

Avengers: Infinity War is predicted to bring a brutal ending to a lot of our favorite heroes, while keeping others alive for future installments in the MCU. While the magic-based hero Doctor Strange has been presumed to make it out of the movie alive, actor Benedict Cumberbatch may be hinting otherwise.

With the possibility of Doctor Strange 2 on the horizon, most fans have assumed that Doctor Strange will make it out of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 alive and well. With a huge actor like Benedict Cumberbatch, most people assumed that this particular Avenger would go on to be a tentpole movie for Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, the future is never certain, and the fact that the rumored Doctor Strange 2 doesn’t even have a release date yet is certainly means for concern.

In a recent interview with Radio Times, Benedict Cumberbatch discussed the mysterious future of Doctor Strange. While he was certainly unable to reveal the fate of his character in Avengers: Infinity War, he did manage to give fans a clue of what to expect.

“I know the latest is that I might not make it out of this film alive…[It says at] the end of the first film, if I’m right, ‘Doctor Strange will be back.’ I have been back, in Thor: Ragnarok and obviously in this film, so there’s nothing to say, either contractually or otherwise, that he’s coming back again.”

What Cumberbatch was referring to was the tease at the end of the Doctor Strange credits confirming that his character would return. Cumberbatch is pointing out that he has already returned twice since then, and according to Cumberbatch himself, there is nothing in his contract that says he will be coming back again after this movie. Though he can’t come right out and say it, Benedict Cumberbatch is essentially preparing us for the demise of his character.

While many people don’t want to say goodbye to the Sorcerer Supreme just yet, it would make sense to see Strange bite the dust in Infinity War. The entire plot of the film is centered around Thanos retrieving all of the Infinity Stones, and Strange himself has one Stone hung on his chest like a necklace. If Thanos does manage to get his hands on all of the Stones by the end of the movie, as many have predicted he will, I personally don’t see any way that Doctor Strangecould survive this.

It’s highly unlikely that Strange would simply take off the Infinity Stone and hand it over to Thanos and his goons, and it’s even more unlikely that Thanos would spare Strange’s life if Strange put up a fight. Considering the context of the movie and Cumberbatch’s words of warning, many Marvel fans may have to prepare themselves to see the death of Doctor Strange later this month.

Even if Doctor Strange does die, though, it does not mean it will necessarily be the end of his character. The magic side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has not yet been fully discovered, so even if we do see Strange bite the dust in Infinity War, as Cumberbatch subtly alluded to in his interview, it is still possible that he can return from the dead just in time to appear in Doctor Strange 2.
